History

The Johannes Trail

What began as a vision of dermatologist Johannes Neuhofer
has grown into a success story

The basic idea and vision behind the Johannesweg had long been on the mind of its initiator, Dr. Johannes Neuhofer. In collaboration with Upper Austrian Tourism, the dermatologist set out to find a region where the guiding principles of the Johannesweg could come to life. Named after John the Baptist, the route of the Johannesweg was intended to resemble a lily, the symbol of light. Elisabeth Hackl-Winkler, an employee of the Mühlviertler Alm Tourism Association, and Klaus Preining, managing director of the Mühlviertler Alm Regional Association, quickly developed a bid proposal. The Mühlviertler Alm region was ultimately selected due to its ideal topography and authentic overall atmosphere.

The Johannesweg trail and the unspoiled beauty of the Mühlviertel Alps, with their
many places of power and energy, complement each other perfectly.

This harmony has made the trail a success story since its opening on June 24, 2012 (the feast day of John the Baptist). The trail has established itself as a hiking route known far beyond the region’s borders.

The focus is on spiritual hiking and health awareness. Walking in nature, combined with the twelve principles of wisdom by Dr. Johannes Neuhofer, is intended to support this.
The unique natural landscape of the Mühlviertel, with its many sweeping views along the trail, clears people’s minds and allows them to recharge their energy. The numerous vantage points offer a positive outlook on the future.

Based on over 30 years of experience in my dermatology practice in Linz, I have felt a strong desire to help people maintain their health.

Through my patients’ various conditions, it became clear to me that what lies deepest within us often manifests on the outside. In our daily work lives, we are driven into a rat race and neglect our own urgent needs.

My inner spark to support people in their regeneration turned into a blazing fire. This led to the development of the 12 Life Wisdom Principles, which serve as the foundation of the Johannesweg. They are intended to strengthen health and prevent illness from taking root. It was clear to me that one’s own regenerative power is best nurtured in the healing embrace of nature. As if under a lucky star, doors opened wide for the project’s implementation in the Mühlviertler Alm region, with support from the state government, the tourism board, and local mayors. This was the foundation that allowed the Johannesweg to become the success story it is today and to bring relief to so many people.
