Initiator Dr. Johannes Neuhofer

Dr. Johannes Neuhofer, founder of the Johannesweg

Initiator Dr. Johannes Neuhofer steht mit einem karrierten Hemd und einer schwarzen Hose vor dem Johannesbrunnen.

As if by some stroke of good fortune, the state government, the tourism board, and the local mayors threw open the doors to the project’s implementation in the Mühlviertel Alps. This laid the foundation for the Johannesweg to become the success story it is today.

We asked the initiator for an interview

One question immediately comes to mind: How did the idea for the Johannesweg come about?
It was as if I had received a mission from a time long past to bring the Johannesweg into being. None of the many critical voices could dissuade me from this idea.

Why did you choose this particular name?
John the Baptist, the voice crying out in the wilderness, lived—just as we do today—in a time of perilous upheaval. His healing influence shines through to our own day and, as our patron saint, serves as a shining example for us.

And what is the significance of the lily, the symbol of the Johannesweg?
The white lily, the symbol of the Johannesweg, corresponds to the lotus flower of the East and stands for love, peace, and spiritual devotion on the path of our development.

You chose the Mühlviertler Alm region. What criteria were decisive for you?
Various regions saturated with tourism were recommended to me. The unspoiled nature, the natural beauty of the rolling landscape, and the hospitality of the people convinced me to establish the Johannesweg in the Mühlviertler Alm. Numerous responses have confirmed this decision.

How do you see the trail’s development over the years?
Many volunteers in the communities of the Mühlviertel Alm regard the Johannesweg as their regional treasure, which they have nurtured and maintained over the years. They deserve our deepest gratitude. However, we must always ensure that economic interests do not jeopardize the original vision. Health for body, mind, and soul are the cornerstones meant to refresh the pilgrim. If we succeed in this, the Johannesweg will retain its magical appeal for many years to come.

What advice would you like to give to hikers as they set out on their journey?
Whether you are happy or carrying a burden as heavy as it may be, never lose heart! Light and shadow are part of every life, and everything has its own meaning. Remember, life—including your own—is the most precious gift you have. Embrace your challenges and trust in divine providence. In the end, it will be for your own good. Especially in these difficult times of upheaval, when pandemics, environmental destruction, the threat of war, and many other catastrophes threaten humanity, it is of the utmost importance to reflect on what truly matters. Then, despite all dangers, you will not lose your footing and will reach your destination. May the Johannesweg offer seekers, for generations to come, a guiding light that leads to health, happiness, and contentment.
